Saturday’s shenanigans at Tramlines Festival (our 2023 coverage is here) began gently with an opening set of spoken word, stream-of-consciousness lyrics-led tunes from local band City Parking, which made for an interesting start to the day. They were both captivating and vulnerable in equal measure. Well worth checking out.

The ever-present Everly Pregnant Brothers, this time with a new frontman, brought their hilarious pastiches of well-known songs to the main stage and got a raucous response from an audience that are well-versed in all things Everly, joining in slagging off Hendersons Relish, the anthemic “Valerie” reimagined as a song about Carvery, and their nod to local legends Human League “Dunt tha wunt mi?”. They were the perfect accompaniment to the first few beers of the day for many Tramlines Festival punters and put everyone in a good mood.

The T’other stage had more of a dance feel to it for the day so wasn’t as appealing as the other stages, but having comedy shows early on offered up one of the highlights of the day in the form of Angelos Epithemiou, who for years has been one of the funniest characters on the comedy circuit. Climbing over the barrier to join the seated audience he got up close and personal and had everyone in the tent laughing at and with him. Pure genius.

Cucumaras and English Teacher both played to a packed tent on the Leadmill stage, and both went down a storm, and over on the main stage, Irish punk band Sprints showed their ferocious energy and an important call to arms from Karla Chubb to all the younger members in the audience to pick up instruments and start bands with their friends.

The energetic Tom Grennan drew a massive audience for his set and honestly should have been the Tramlines Festival headliner for the day. The actual headliner, Jamie T, was not good at all and should have probably stayed on his tour bus, but Grennan was an absolute force of nature. His short set was full of massive singalong moments, which the family-heavy audience sang along with at the top of their voices. He was the real headline act of the day. Class, energy and good vibes were perfect for the moment.
