Taking Back Sunday has been doing the damn thing for 20 years now and have no plans of stopping until they conquer the world. The band has long been a household name for both “elder emos” and newer Gen-Z fans alike with their impressively relatable and infectious discography. The band has been touring in support of their latest full-length album (and eighth studio album), titled 152 (2023), taking Midwest rockers Citizen along for the ride.

Being fellow tri-staters, TBS has graced Connecticut stages a plethora of times in these past two decades, and we were ecstatic to catch them headlining a stage as intimate as The Dome at the Toyota Oakdale Theatre this summer.

Stepping out to the stage in their infamous maroon suits, Taking Back Sunday let it rip by opening with the latest fan-favourite single, “S’old,” off of 152. While other bands that have been around as long as them may grow tired of their deep cuts, TBS never shies away from honouring the nostalgia of their fanbase. They made this clear when they jumped right into “Set Phasers To Stun” (2004), “What’s It Feel Like To Be A Ghost?” (2006), and “A Decade Under the Influence” (2004).

Their setlist was fruitful and danced between the many eras and albums Taking Back Sunday has blessed our scene with, including more deep cuts from their first two, and undeniably iconic, studio records, Tell All Your Friends (2002) and Where You Want To Be (2004). Frontman Adam Lazzara’s stage presence has always been lively and emotive, demonstrating his infamous microphone choker move for the crowd even after all these years.

It is so gratifying watching TBS live and being able to witness firsthand the passion and persistence this band has put into their music and performances despite being active for so long. Closing out with “Cute Without The ‘E’” and “MakeDamnSure,” TBS sent us off with an explosive encore and another memorable show in the books.

Taking Back Sunday will be wrapping up this current summer tour before starting up the festival season and another headliner with The Used this fall.
