Bands like Status Quo are part of British rock music history, and although the 2024 version of the band now only features frontman Francis Rossi, the sight of a packed-out Piece Hall in Halifax for Quo’s visit to Yorkshire as part of this iconic venue’s Summer run, showed that you really can’t beat a bit of Quo rock ‘n’ roll magic.

Opening their set with “Caroline,” Rossi and Co. had the Quo Army rocking from the barrier to the bar as the band followed that up by cruising through a rather appropriate “Rain” and an equally energetic “Little Lady.”

Taking turns taking over the vocal lead, every member of the Quo live entourage now looks like they were having an absolute blast on stage. Whereas some bands look like they’re going through the motions after decades at the top of their game, not so with Status Quo, who prove they still have a passion to rock.

Rossi himself was in fine forming between songs, firstly asking about the weather, then scolding himself for swearing too much before discussing his age. The crowd may have had a soaking from the typical Yorkshire weather, but that didn’t dampen any spirits throughout the band’s 100-minute rock extravaganza.

And boy, was it loud! Not only had they come with the jokes and the songs, but the band had made sure the whole thing was cranked up to twelve so, even if you didn’t have a ticket and were within a two-mile radius of Halifax, the Quo left you in no doubt as to who was in town.

Of course, it was left to an obligatory “Rockin’ All Over The World” to wrap up the main set and what a way to end it as, a few songs later, the band left the stage with the previous one hundred or so minutes showing that there is still plenty of fuel left in the Quo tank yet.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
