Anyone who has been to The Piece Hall in Halifax knows that the courtyard venue is stunning even on a “non-event” day. So, whoever booked PJ Harvey to perform in the venue couldn’t have booked a more perfect match.

One of England’s most unique artists, PJ Harvey’s music is a million miles from the frantic pop-rock of McFly, which bounced around the walls of this venue only a few days earlier. Mystically, haunting, and atmospheric, it’s completely impossible to try and pigeonhole the music created by this much-loved artist into one category.

From the moment she glides onto the stage, this packed courtyard is simple under PJ Harvey’s spell. There are no mosh pits or crowd surfing or any of that pushing or shoving; her fans are simply there to soak up her music. Some mouth the words back at her, some look mesmerized, and some just stand there taking it all in. And that’s all you can do. However you approach this experience, one thing every single one of these fans has in common, and that is a complete love for the headliner.

Backed up by a band who perfectly complement her voice, PJ Harvey takes her fans on a journey through her career right up to her recent album, I Inside The Old Year Dying, with the extensive set list including the title track and the first three tracks opening her set, “Prayer at the Gate,” “Autumn Term,” and “Lwonesome Tonight.”

Despite the typically unpredictable British summer weather, for her fans, this was a truly magical night and one that will be remembered for many years to come. Check out our photo gallery from the show here:

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
