Over the past three months, there have been some iconic acts gracing The Piece Hall. From the new-wave punk of Blondie to nu-metal superstars Korn, some of the biggest names in music have joined the list of memorable nights in this wonderful venue.

There is no letting up as the series draws to a close for another year and, following the unforgettable sounds of PJ Harvey 24 hours earlier, it was the turn of American alt-rock gamechangers Pixies to pack out the venue.

With new bassist Emma Richardson joining the line-up and a new album announcement, it’s a busy time for the American alternative rock band. Judging by the reaction of the packed courtyard as the band kicked off their set with minimum fuss, the Boston band are a welcome addition to this year’s calendar. Blitzing through a career-spanning set, right from opener “Gouge Away,” Pixies trim off the fat of between-song banter to cram in as many songs as possible.

Airing a few tracks from their upcoming new album, including recent single “Chicken,” the band weighed in with a massive 27-song set which, by the end, had placed itself up there near the top of the list of unforgettable nights at The Piece Hall.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
