Moonrooph Premieres His Enveloping Album ‘Man In The Moonrooph’
New York City-based ambient artist Moonrooph premieres his immersive new electronic album ‘Man In The Moonrooph.’
If the purpose of music is to evoke emotions, then Moonrooph has got it all figured out. The feelings and emotions come in many different forms on his new album, Man In The Moonrooph, which will be released on August 30th. Composed of 13 new songs, the album is an immersive experience, to say the least.
The name that musician Rob Morrison uses to release music, the possibilities are endless with Moonrooph. Any idea can turn into something and that’s kind of the way this album was recorded. Improvisation is often an artist’s greatest strength, and he used it to his advantage with this enveloping new recording. And while it might sound like it’s all electronics, this album shows to be a well-rounded and technically sound instrumentalist.
Describing the creative process and his motivation behind Man in the Moonrooph, Morrison explains:
“Some songs were built off of improvised loops, and others were more ‘composed.’ For the most part, the album was recorded in a short span of days this summer, and though I never set out to make the album about a particular season, it kind of wound up that way. The music couldn’t help but be influenced by its surroundings. Summer in New York City can get pretty brutal sometimes, but there’s also such beauty in it; the parks, the rivers, the way light changes, and how flowers and skyscrapers mingle and coexist.
“I find that listening to good music (ambient or otherwise) can help to lower my brain’s internal temperature during a heatwave. So I guess Man in the Moonrooph is my attempt to make my own music for cooling other people’s brains, too.”
Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, Morrison has lived in New York City for just about 20 years now. His surroundings have really played a large part in influencing his musical direction. It’s all just Morrison writing, playing, and recording everything on his own. Ambient music has been a true love of his since he first was exposed to it in high school. It had a profound effect on his mind, making him feel differently about music than he ever had before.
Creating these soundscapes takes real skill, and Morrison has it. Man in the Moonrooph features Morrison on lap steel, pedal steel, electric guitar, synth, and tape loops. As he alludes to above, summer had a large influence on these songs. The sounds and melodies are meant to evoke the feelings of sun, heat, clear night skies, and more. There is also a trippier, more psychedelic element to it too. Most forms of music are terrific in their own way, but those that are moving and stimulating always stand out the most.
