Boston pop-soul/indie folk act Lake Street Dive just finished the first leg of their “Good Together Tour,” which saw the band crisscrossing North America through the summer. They wrapped things up with two nights at Portland, Maine’s seaside venue, Thompson’s Point, on August 17th and 18th. We were fortunate enough to make it there for the second night of fun on Sunday after a completely sold-out night one!

The venue was more than half full when the supporting act, Celisse, arrived on stage. Despite the gloomy, overcast skies (thanks to some wildfire smoke from our neighbours to the north in Canada), the singer/songwriter energized the crowd with her fun and uplifting set of R&B and soul-infused music.

As the sun began to inch towards setting, Lake Street Dive emerged and kicked right into things with the tour’s namesake and the title track off their latest record, Good Together. The band often makes an appearance in the late summer at Thompson’s Point and enjoys quite a following here as just two hours north of Boston; Portland is almost a second home for them. In fact, at one point, vocalist Rachael Price told the audience that the band looks forward to these Thompson’s Point shows all year long. The night continued with “Hello? Goodbye!” and newer tracks, “Far Gone” and “Better Not Tell You.”

As always, Price sounded absolutely incredible, as did her cohorts. The production/backline on this tour looked absolutely stunning in the dying light. It was hard to look away for the entire set! The band was sure to give a good mix of old fan-favourites along with new music, including the infectiously catchy “Hypotheticals” and “Side Pony.” The latter, Price explained that the band had intended to stop playing live, but due to the sheer volume of requests, the group “finally got over ourselves” and added it back.

Fans continued dancing the night away as the band delivered the remainder of their whopping 22-song set. They closed with “Dance With A Stranger” and “You Go Down Smooth” before a three-song encore that saw Celisse come back out and provide vocal accompaniment and some serious guitar shredding for a cover of Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl.”

The night ended with the mega-hit “Good Kisser,” with most fans waiting to hear the full set before funnelling out into the night. You can catch Lake Street Dive this fall on leg two of their tour, which sees them playing in major markets throughout the Eastern/Central U.S.
