Everything We Know About the Future of ‘Squid Game’: Seasons 2 & 3
When it was released, it had captured the attention of people worldwide. In the weeks and months following, Squid Game continued to enjoy mass popularity.
So much so that a second season has been confirmed for the smash hit. It could be argued that the timing of its release had helped contribute to its initial success, as people were experiencing lockdown around the planet and had to find forms of entertainment to keep them occupied.
Squid Game certainly provided that, as the show’s premise was one that appealed to viewers. It saw 100 contestants all look to compete for huge cash prizes in child-like tasks and activities. However, those who failed would ultimately end up with deadly consequences.
What do we know about Squid Game Season 2?
As of July 2024, we know that there will be a Season 2 of the hit Squid Game. Filming is understood to have started in 2023, with Netflix having confirmed way back in 2022 that there would be a sequel.
A specific date has yet to be set regarding its actual release, but there are good indicators that we could see it happen towards the end of the year. December has been touted as a possible release, with Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun, the main protagonist) suggesting and teasing fans with a potential December window. If this is the case, it could make interesting viewing over the Christmas period for some families.
We can expect to see Lee Jung-jae return in Season 2, but he might be one of the only familiar faces. Of the 456 people who took part in the contests, he was the only one to be left standing at the end of it.
There have even been suggestions of a third season in the future, with show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk having made public comment about it potentially being in the works. There doesn’t appear to be any confirmation or solid information about it happening, but there is every chance it’s something that we could see in the future.
Squid Game Global Success
Indeed, given that there have been spin-off shows, YouTube videos, and even slots based on episode nine of the first season titled “Squid Game – One Lucky Day,” as well as plenty of merchandise that has been able to purchase, it’s no surprise that fans will get a second and potentially third season of the hit show.
Figures have revealed that there were more than 142 million households to have watched the show that hold a Netflix account, making the show the most-watched in more than 94 countries and becoming the #1 ranked show to have ever been released by the streaming platform at the time. At the same time, over a four-week period, more than 1.65 billion hours of content was estimated to have been streamed relating to Squid Game.
These figures go on to highlight the huge success that the show has had since it was released, and why there is so much fan appeal regarding a second season, and potentially a third.
Could a Third Season Work for Squid Game?
Sometimes, it can be a good idea to quit while ahead. There have been many instances where companies or people have tried to milk an idea for as much as they can, which has caused damage to their reputation or the product.
At the moment, a second season would definitely be a good idea, given the success that has been enjoyed. As mentioned, there have been several spin-offs and licensed products to have been created based on the first season, it only makes sense to try and carry things on.
However, this should come with caution. Just because the first season was a hit, it doesn’t mean the second will translate into being one. Some viewers may have liked the novelty of the idea, while others may have only watched because others told them to or because they had nothing else to view at the time.
This can mean a third season could be a huge risk and something that might want to be considered after the second season has been released. Show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has already shown a little hesitation in the past about making further seasons, although it does seem that he is prepared to give it a go.
