Marking something of a shift for promoters here, this evening saw the first ever comedian gracing the Summer line-up of The Piece Hall series in Halifax. In a shift away from the usual musical entertainment, festival-headlining musical funnyman Bill Bailey entertained a sold-out crowd.

Fresh with a new haircut, the once ponytailed Bailey was greeted like a hero by this crowd who lapped up every moment of his Thoughtifier show, with Bill Bailey himself commenting on the venue and clearly loving his time in Yorkshire.

For anyone who has seen Bill Bailey on stage before on one of his many stand-up tours, you would already have been fully versed in how things go. A mixture of stories and musical accompanyments, the Halifax show was no different with Bailey breaking into the first of multiple musical sections barely ten minutes into the set.

Already known for his talents as a comic, the show also sees Bailey showcasing his wide-ranging talents as a musician across many different instruments. Delivered in his usual wacky manner, part of you still comes away thinking how Bailey is also a really accomplished musician.

So the first night could be described as nothing but a resounding success for both The Peice Hall and the promoters of the Summer Series. This sold-out crowd will be hoping that it isn’t the last either but, having seen Bill Bailey deliver this masterclass of musical comedy, whoever follows is going to have to come up with something special to follow that.

Here are a few photographs from the show, and if you want to find out more about the remaining shows being held at The Piece Hall you can click here.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
