Prolific artist Balder Gernot recently released his latest ten-track album, I’m Just a Man. The album is a rich blend of rock and pop infused with Gernot’s signature innovative touch. It delves deep into the complexities of human society, reflecting on themes that span from existential angst to societal critique and personal introspection.

I’m Just a Man takes listeners on a journey through the dark realities of human existence, starting with a reflection on humanity’s lost state in a chaotic universe. The tracks progress with a thoughtful examination of the consequences of human actions and aspirations. Musically, the album is diverse, transitioning from melodic rock to more introspective tones, with evocative guitar solos that add depth to the narrative.

Gernot’s careful attention to detail is evident in the album’s production. Each track is intricately connected, weaving together a cohesive message about the complexities of being human—from ancient times to the modern world. The album is a collection of songs and a profound exploration of the human condition. Resonating with listeners on a deeply emotional level, Balder joined us for an exclusive Track-by-Track rundown of the album tracks.

1. “Lost Within The Universe”

“The album starts with the track ‘Lost Within The Universe,’ in which we already clearly understand the underlying message: we are truly lost in the universe both in a physical and moral sense, and we do not even realize that the whole world lives in a spiral of violence.”

2. “There Are Billions of Men on Earth”

“The album then proceeds with the track ‘There Are Billions of Men on Earth’ in which, although the music is softer, the message emerges that we are now billions of men on earth fighting day after day to make room for ourselves in an increasingly smaller world.”

3. “Dance Around The Fire”

“The third track, on the other hand, is inspired by the myth of Prometheus where man through the invention of fire begins to become aware of its power.”

4. “What Have We Left Behind”

“The fourth track is based on a harder rock. Here, the message becomes more retrospective, more doubtful about what man really is and what he is leaving behind with his actions.”

5. “We Couldn’t Get Enough”

“The real turning point comes from the next track, ‘We Couldn’t Get Enough,’ where a standard rock style is no longer identifiable but a nervous, agitated melodic rock where it is described how a man can’t get enough of his actions and turns into a ruthless demon with no feelings who  will stop at nothing.”

6. “Now Light The Fire”

“The musical style of the sixth track, ‘Now Light The Fire,’ is similar to the previous one but is based on a lyric in which one man among many urges, condemns him to the stake because he is not power-hungry, and will never love war. Although the story seems paradoxical, it is not far from the reality of those who go against the grain today. Those who try to analyze what the true ideals to follow should be.”

7. “He Is The Time”

“This brings us to the seventh track, ‘He Is The Time,’ with which is really difficult to define the style.

“The track proceeds confidently on its rhythmic basis as the confidence of the man described by the text who feels so powerful that he can even kill his God. But ultimately fails in his mad utopia because, in the end, the only victor will be time, which always puts an end to all delusions of human omnipotence.”

8. “When I Step On My Land”

“After the failed attempt to kill God, we come to track number eight, ‘When I Step On My Land.’ Here, the wise man realizes that he is walking on his own land and describes how he feels thinking that this very land throughout history has been covered with rivers of blood and mountains of bones are buried beneath his steps.

“The track is based on an almost dance-like rhythm where the words are obsessively repeated, creating a continuous tension that culminates in two catchy guitar solos.”

9. “I’m Just A Man”

“This leads to the ninth track, the titular album track, ‘I’m Just a Man.’

“The track is catchier and ends with two long solos. Herein, Balder in a poetic way tells that all the violence, disasters, and wars are no accident, but are due to the simple fact that we are just men and that we are made that way: we resemble demons.”

10. The Human Tide”

“Thus, we come to the last track of the album where the music becomes less nervous, almost acknowledging the helplessness of everyone carried by the human tide without being able to decide anything. The track recites that no one feels responsible because they do not feel part of the game even though in reality, everyone is caught up in it up to their necks.”
