It’s been like a wave of momentum over the last year or so for Babes In Canyon. Along the way, we have helped premiere a couple of their engaging, likeable music videos. By now, it’s become clear that this is a band with a knack for producing top-notch video clips that fit like a glove with their captivating indie pop jams.
Today, the Seattle indie-pop trio premiere their latest video for “High Tide.” It’s the latest single off their latest EP, Year To Live, released late last year via Darcy Blue Records. Led by Amanda Ebert and her husband Nathan Hamer, songs like “High Tide” emphasize the act’s metamorphosis from a traditional folk act into more of a modern pop band with lots of radio appeal.
Commenting on the video, Ebert states:
“We wanted the video, like the song, to be a love letter to the varied landscapes of California. When I lived in LA and started exploring I was fascinated by how many different little worlds can exist inside one state, and since then driving up the coast has become a special ritual for us.”
Hamer adds:
“On our most recent west coast tour we made it our priority to stop and shoot in places that felt like quintessential California and completely different from one another. From Palm Springs to the Redwoods, from the Santa Monica Pier to Sonoma Valley. We wanted seamless transitions between locations, so we recreated the same framing and focal length at each spot. A lot of the filming was done on the fly, often on our way to a show, so it led to some really spontaneous magical moments. Like the opening shot of the video where pelicans are soaring over the Golden Gate Bridge.”
Initially, a duo, Ebert and Hamer have turned Babes In Canyon into a full-fledged band. The group now includes bassist and percussionist Michelle Nuño. Hamer and Nuño are both former members of Seattle indie-folk group Kuinka. The success of their debut EP, Second Cities, made Ebert and Hamer hungry for more. So, they approached the recording of its follow-up quite aggressively.
Year To Live was written and recorded on a portable recording rig while the band was on the road. This enabled them the convenience of getting ideas down on tape quickly without having to wait to get to the studio. The album itself is a snapshot of the discovery, evolution, and expression that is the core purpose of the band. Their sound on this record is more evolved, a natural progression towards heavy beats, storytelling lyrics, and folk instrumentation.
If there’s one constant theme or element of Babes In Canyon, it’s growth, both personal and musical. The band hopes that that passion catapults them forward and rubs off on you, the listener.
