With a month of gigs lined up at Sounds of the City 2024 in Millenium Square in Leeds, the honour of opening up the series was handed to Essex lads Nothing But Thieves, who are riding on a bit of a crest of popularity, having recently supported American pop-punk stars Green Day on their UK stadium tour.

Kicking things off for this sold-out show were trashy Essex punk rockers Bad Nerves, who certainly wasted no time in battering through their sleazy anthems. Rattling through the likes of “Sorry”, the Essex lads were as comfortably at home on an outdoor stage in front of a few thousands as they look like they would be ripping it up in some trashy rock club. Obnoxiously loud, you can almost imagine the locals wondering what the rest of the Summer would be like if this was just the start.

The fact that this was one of the first shows of the series to sell out is a testament to how popular Nothing But Thieves have become over the past twelve months. In fact, judging by the smiles on their faces as they walk out to this sold-out crowd and plenty of homemade banners, you get the impression that even they haven’t quite got over how popular they are. A loud, riffy start to Sounds of the City, you could almost feel their Muse meets Royal Blood guitar-laced sounds reverberating around the centre of Leeds.

With more mainstream acts due to grace this very stage over the next few weeks, anyone who had the notion that rock was dead was in for a rude awakening as, along with this sold-out crowd, Nothing But Thieves made sure that Sounds Of the City kicked off in explosive fashion setting the standard for the rest of this Summer of shows.
