With the threat of lightning storms and local curfews looming, it looked like Loyle Carner’s (website here) debut in Halifax would be pulled at the last minute. Even half an hour before the hip-hop star was due to hit the stage, fans were being herded away from metal barriers as flashes of lightning illuminated the surrounding hills.

Thankfully, though, just a mere twenty minutes after his listed stage time, Carner appeared on stage and delivered what can only be described as a masterclass in soulful hip-hop to a sold-out crowd. Taking to the stage, Carner is almost lost for words at the sight of a packed-out courtyard at The Piece Hall, a location which has seen many iconic acts grace the very stage Carner was on. Blazing through “Hate,” “Plastic,” and “Ain’t Nothing Changed,” Carner spots a young fan in the crowd and quickly makes his way down to the front of the barrier to embrace the fan in a truly magical moment.

And, despite the storms threatening to derail this night, nothing was going to stop the hip-hop favourite from making sure these fans were given everything they expected. Packing emotion, politics and a seventy-minute set filled with massive tunes, Loyle Carner was at times lost for words, grinning at the scenes unfolding in front of him. Describing his Halifax debut as one of the best nights of his life, you only had to look around this five-thousand-plus crowd to see that many people shared that sentiment with him.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
