JJ & The Mood – “Tired of Being Tough” [Song Review]
Decked out in gleaming synths and a driving rhythm, JJ & The Mood invoke the energy of retro disco vibes laced with tinges of funk on “Tired of Being Tough.”
Cincinnati, Ohio-based alt-disco duo JJ & The Mood releases their new single, “Tired of Being Tough,” a song about getting serious about being silly and being yourself, allowing yourself to feel the vast array of wonderful human emotions.
Vocalist Jack Sjogren says, “‘Tired of Being Tough’ is about my journey of unlearning the mores of toxic masculinity and meeting my emotions when they arise rather than stifling them.”
Made up of Jack Sjogren, a multi-hyphenate cartoonist and songwriter/producer Joey Joseph, the pair initially met in Orlando, Florida. Yet it wasn’t until a few years later that they got together as JJ & The Mood.
JJ & The Mood’s “How Many Times” was the soundtrack for a global iPhone Ad Campaign, thrusting the duo into the limelight almost overnight. They regularly appear on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, and Jack Sjogren’s book was showcased in Oprah’s Book Club.
“Tired of Being Tough” opens on a crisp, rolling snare and then takes on a funky, disco rhythm topped by Sjogren’s half-sung/half-spoken-word vocals. A high falsetto delivers the vivid chorus. A rippling, swooshing bridge shifts the harmonic flow, leading to a dazzling wall of sound soaked in heady dance momentum.
Decked out in gleaming synths and a driving rhythm, JJ & The Mood invoke the energy of retro disco vibes laced with tinges of funk. Good stuff!
