Jacob on the Moon Serve Up a “Sweet Time” with Their Latest Single [Premiere]

It’s hard to describe, but some bands, like Jacob on the Moon, have a summer sound. That’s why their new single “Sweet Time” really hits the spot. It’s true to how the band leader describes their music, as “beachy pop rock.” There’s a lightness to the Chicago group’s style, which makes it easily digestible and features a well-defined fun factor.

You can discover more on Live! From Earth, the group’s upcoming album, due out on September 12th. While not a live album in the traditional sense, as in a set of songs recorded at a live venue, the songs were recorded live at Audiotree Studios in Chicago last June. Except for “Wander,” all songs on Live! From Earth were previously released as studio versions, primarily by frontman Jake Dinneen.

Discussing the recording and style of “Sweet Time,” Dinneen says:

“He’d probably tell you it’s ‘just fine’ or ‘could be better’ or something else too humble, but listen to Dylan Barnett’s solo on ‘Sweet Time!’ It’s one of my favourite moments on the record. Not just because of his playing alone, but because everyone is really locked in. I also have to call out the main riff being played by guitar, saxophone, and keys and how great it sounds. The band has made great use of that kind of blend to emulate the synths and sounds I used on the studio version of the song that was released in February 2023.”

Jacob on the Moon may seem like a solo project, but it’s a full-fledged band that started as a solo endeavour. Dinneen got the ball rolling about five years ago when he wanted to pursue writing and recording. He wrote and recorded most of the songs on Live! From Earth entirely on his own. So, although they aren’t new in a traditional sense, these newly recorded live studio versions sound quite different than their previous versions.

Despite his tireless work, Dinneen was pleased to welcome bandmates to diversify and add pizzaz to his sound. And it has paid off for him creatively, as Dinneen feels that the songs on the record are his favourite versions. With their chemistry growing, Dinneen and his band plan to share new studio recordings this fall, which will illustrate why Jacob on the Moon is now a band.
