On his latest single/visualizer, “boytoy,” indie-pop artist Derek Simpson offers himself up as an object of sexual desire, a plaything whose forte is fulfilling all whims and wishes. “boytoy” is the seventh single from his upcoming third album Somehow.

Based in Los Angeles, Simpson has amassed more than five million streams, sync placements in Workaholics, The Wheel, and the upcoming film Shook, along with acclaim from many elite media outlets.

The track opens with Smooth Jas saying, “You’re a sexy boy,” giving the song mischievous immediacy. Dark throbbing synths ride a syncopated rhythm and gritty bassline as Simpson narrates his role via tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

“One more night with your boytoy / Turn off the light and touch your boytoy / Trying new poses when you want some fun / You out here show and tellin’ everyone.”

A pulsating bridge introduces a snarling, psychedelic guitar solo, followed by the harmonics returning to the rhythmic cadence of drums and bass, giving the tune a seductive nonchalance.

The video depicts the boytoy in various outfits, ranging from an oversized, down-filled, winter jacket to Simpson getting tangled up as he tries to take off his shirt. None of the costumes or poses imply a consummate Casanova, adding to the burlesque of the situation.

Vaguely reminiscent of Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good,” with “boytoy,” Derek Simpson transforms trope into delicious, subtle slapstick.
