Indie-rock outfit Tide Bends has released their latest EP, Say Yeah, a blend of alternative, Brit rock, and shoegaze.

Tide Bends arose from the 2015 meeting of Dave Hough (vocals, guitar) and Dan Nolan (drums). This was followed by the release of their debut EP, Greened, in 2016. Later, the band added Rudy Meir on guitar and synths and MJ Hancock, a multi-instrumentalist, on vocals and bass. The addition of Meir and Hancock elevated Tide Bends’ sound.

Hough explains, “New harmonies and melodies followed almost instantly, and everything started sounding so big.”

Say Yeah begins with “Birthday,” opening on a muted guitar riding a Filter-like rhythm, giving the song a dreamy, weightlessness. Wistful vocals highlighted by light abrasive tones imbue the lyrics with a slo-mo, drifting sensation.

Highlights on the EP include “Grasshopper,” featuring hazy guitars and a galloping-like rhythm that ebbs and rises, shifting the intensity of the cadence. The harmonics have a psychedelic feel, infusing the soundscape with a retro, washed-in motion.

For some reason, the closing track, “On Repeat,” summons up hints of CSNY’s “Southern Cross” and silky Tommy Bolin because of its soft, rolling sensation, a sensation drenched in shimmering guitars that takes on lysergic, oscillating textures. Pensive vocals infuse the lyrics with mellow surfaces, at once yearning and gently beckoning.

Innovative and suffused with wonderfully fuzzy layers, the songs on Say Yeah are deliciously arranged and deftly performed.
