dead7’s sophomore EP, all time does is pass and all i do is remember, is a crushingly heavy and poignant experience.
Led by previous singles “let me drown” and “two lives,” the St. Louis metalcore band explores self-destruction and loss through a lens of acceptance. Moving through pain, even when it feels unbearable, is a central theme of the EP.
Taking elements from progressive metal & post-hardcore, the band’s switch from brutal, chugging riffs to ambient, atmospheric instrumentals echo heavyweights such as Loathe and Spiritbox.
dead7 sought to address taboo topics on the EP:
“We reflected on times where we felt our lowest. Whether that was past relationships that weren’t working, situations where we felt like we had no control, being overwhelmed by life’s daily struggles, and thoughts of death. We believe the raw emotion from these vulnerable feelings and situations are what people feel the most, and probably talk about the least,”
Fragility is displayed in both lyrics and instrumentals, but there’s no shortage of devastating breakdowns and harsh riffs. Uniquely mechanical and eerie, “god’s eye” features an unsettling call, “they wait for you” repeats while Kozik’s scream, “you can’t take it back now” cuts through.
dead7’s debut music video, “weather,” ties the EP’s themes of duality and struggle together. “It’s guts & it’s glory / It’s gold & it’s misery,” Kozik gently sings over airy instrumentals. The visuals are minimalist, Kozik, bathed in green light, sits in front of a bright red background. Close-up shots add to the vulnerability in the song’s lyrics. With all time does is pass and all i do is remember and their previous EP the new pain collective, dead7 are cementing themselves among the newest crop of metalcore’s most innovative bands.
