In an era where pop music has become quite bloated and even excessive, it’s nice to run into an artist like Majorette. Today, the singer-songwriter unveils her minimalist anthem “One Glove” and its accompanying music video. The song will be found on her new EP Forever Starts Tuesday, due out on January 23rd. Clocking in at slightly over a minute and a half, “One Glove” is what you would call short and sweet. It’s a bright, playful track, meant to sound like something for a K Records compilation. There’s a homemade element to the song, with just a single vocal track over a basic drum beat. The song tells the story of Majorette selling her clothing a season at a time in an effort to make enough to get by. It’s no doubt original, in its own distinctive way.

The video for “One Glove” is also meant to be vintage, shot entirely on 16 mm film. It features Majorette in a number of vintage period-piece costumes, which all happen to be hand-sewn by herself. There’s a 1960s pinup calendar girl theme to the clip, especially thanks to her many interesting and colourful outfits.

Discussing the song, Majorette states:

“I wrote ‘One Glove’ during perhaps the most financially turbulent year of my life. I kept selling my clothes from the prior season hoping that by the time the next season came around I would be in a more stable place. Then winter would arrive, and I would be without a coat! Writing the song actually brought me a lot of comfort, because I could laugh at myself a little bit and see the humor in the situation. The idea for the video was inspired by MGM musicals which are famously glamorous and fantastical. Much like the dream sequence in Singin’ in the Rain, I was living in delusion!”

Danielle Salomon, a Queens-based songwriter is the person behind the Majorette moniker. Her goal with this project is to compose indie pop reminiscent of the genre in its mid-2000s form. Salomon’s songs are typically short and melodic and certainly very much droll in the best way possible.

This started as a bedroom project and has mostly stayed that way. Originally, she began recording demos on an old 1980s Yamaha synthesizer, and that process has largely remained the same. Although now, Salomon has a few collaborators whom she feels comfortable working with. Music doesn’t always have to be super serious. Marojette employs a simple yet effective strategy to entertain and amuse you.
