Jazz, blues, folk singer-songwriter, and producer Loryn Taggart releases her new single/lyric video, “Scandal Monger,” a track from her upcoming debut album set for release in the fall of 2023.

Written while backpacking through New Zealand, “Scandal Monger” relates a tale of Taggart bonding with her fellow backpackers, revealing some of her darkest secrets to strangers.

Taggart explains, “That backfired heavily when I realized a lot of what I would say was used against me. I wrote this song based on the feeling of getting very close to people, people that you wouldn’t normally get so close to, and the consequence of letting people in too quickly. I met some of my best friends during that time, and I also met some of the worst people. When we were vulnerable, we’d weaponize each other’s secrets.”

Currently based in Montreal, Taggart was raised in the Prairies. At the age of 16, she left home and moved to Toronto to pursue music, where she performed with a bar band. Later, as a solo performer, she found herself on the stages of Horseshoe Tavern, Rivoli, Cameron House, and Le Verre Bouteille, followed by nominations from Canadian Folk Music Awards, the 18th Annual Independent Music Awards, and SoundClash Music Awards. She was the runner-up recipient of the Cobalt Prize for Blues Innovative Songwriter of the Year.

In 2021, Taggart was asked to audition for the role of David Bowie on an international tribute tour highlighting Bowie’s The Berlin Trilogy era. She landed the job on the spot. After partnering with La Tribe Agence and Moment Factory, she went on to perform the role of David Bowie at renowned venues such as Place Des Arts, Canadian Arts Centre, and the Amphitheatre Cogeco.

“Scandal Monger” opens on a sleazy blues guitar topped by Taggart’s deliciously inflected vocals, divulging wily tones. Swaggering with shifty surfaces, the harmonics blend blues and jazz savours into an unctuous melody, dripping with devious aromas.
