Divine Sweater Premieres Their Warming Single, “Waking up Alone / Julia”
Divine Sweater premiere their new music video for “Waking up Alone / Julia” a day ahead of their brand-new full-length record ‘Down Deep (A Nautical Apocalypse),’ out via Better Company Records.
When you dig Down Deep enough, you end up finding certain diamonds in the rough, such as Divine Sweater and the premiere of their new music video for “Waking up Alone / Julia.” The clip’s release comes a day ahead of their brand-new full-length record Down Deep (A Nautical Apocalypse), out via Better Company Records.
The band has already introduced the record with the singles “All the Way Back” and “When the World is Ending,” with “Waking up Alone / Julia” being a more unique track and one of the most inventive on a record full of highly inventive songs. With a concept record like Down Deep (A Nautical Apocalypse), you would expect a lot of original, progressive songs, but “Waking up Alone / Julia” is perhaps the standout number in that regard through the album’s ten tracks.
Situating the song for us, the band states:
“‘Waking up Alone / Julia’ captures the hazy space you inhabit when you wake up first thing in the morning. Is it day or is it night? Here, you drift in and out of memories. Dive bars. Dance floors. Light reflecting off a disco ball. Two bodies moving as one. You’re waking up alone. Remembering they’re gone.
“We can’t go back in time, but where would we go if we had the chance? Sonically, ‘Waking up Alone / Julia’ is a love letter to krautrock and fusion era Miles Davis.”
Down Deep (A Nautical Apocalypse) is thoroughly and completely a concept album, a series of stories and reflections influenced by the end of the world. At the time of Earth becoming uninhabitable, survivors seek out abandoned submarines for shelter. Within each song, the characters look back on their lives, colourfully remembering instances of loss, joy, regret, self-reflection, and more. With how strange the last few years have been, the members of the band don’t see their concept as being all that unlikely. The story begins with hope that eventually turns into fear and anguish, which makes for a record that delivers in all the right ways for someone looking for a challenging listening experience.
