When it comes to Cosmic Kitten, there is no beating around the bush. This power trio likes to take the proverbial bull by the horns, candid and uninhibited when approaching their songwriting. Today, the band unveils their latest music video for “Laugh of a Lifetime,” the title track to their upcoming full-length, due for release on May 5th.

They are unabashedly bold and biting on this record, particularly on the aforementioned title track, which deals with some serious subject matter. The accompanying music video is on the esoteric side and very much open to audience interpretation.

Explaining the basis for “Laugh of a Lifetime” and what it’s about, the band states:

“This song is about sexual assault and the lasting confusion and torment of being a survivor. It expresses the feelings of entrapment, manipulation and being deceived by someone you thought was your friend.”

Their fourth full-length album, Laugh of a Lifetime, follows in the footsteps of its title track, exploring the idea of finding mental wellness while maneuvering the world as a gender-fluid, non-binary person of colour. In this state, this individual is also attempting to deal with past traumas while balancing them with the realities of society as it stands after a global pandemic that has fundamentally shaken the core of humanity.

Singer and guitarist Karen Marie wrote most of the album’s songs on an acoustic guitar during breaks at her day job. She began work on the record in the summer of 2021, and the band ended up working on it with Steve Moriarty, drummer of the little-known but highly respected ’90s band The Gits. Moriarty had heard a Cosmic Kitten cover of The Gits’ song “Cut My Skin” and became interested in working with the band. The finishing touches for Laugh of a Lifetime were overseen by the absolute rock legend Jack Endino, who mastered the record. Endino was instrumental in the birth of grunge rock, thanks to his early work with Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Mudhoney.

Serious in tone, Laugh of a Lifetime promises to be the most moving and poignant piece of work that Cosmic Kitten will have ever released.
