As they are written, songs take on meanings of their own, and that meaning can often change as the song progresses. Molly Maguires’ “No Reason to Run” is a very multi-faceted composition; it takes on an even larger meaning with its accompanying music video, which you could say is more like a short film.

Filmed with the assistance of longtime collaborator Rob Santos, the video was shot in the interior of Rhode Island at a secret, supposedly haunted location. Being a fan of low-budget horror films, Santos was inspired to create a visual that would capture the essence of a b-movie, with many camera angles, harsh cuts, and minor errors typical of the genre.

Discussing the making of the video, frontman JJ Sorensen says:

“Rob and I approached this like we were setting out to make a low budget five or six minute horror short film. We really wanted to stay true to that genre and aesthetic while complimenting the song, and I think we pulled it off. The film we came up with is layered in the same way the song is and speaks to the internal and external themes of impending trouble and just a general sense of doom and fear.”

As Sorensen alludes to, “No Reason to Run” was written in a way to emphasize an impending sense of doom. The song begins with a haunting melody before the doom slowly grows, as the music transitions into a symphony of bluesy indie rock. Sorensen became inspired to write the song when he was walking home alone one night and began particularly disillusioned with things. It began as a metaphor for a depressive anxiety attack, and as he continued to work on it, it began to take on a life of its own.

Regarding the song, Sorensen adds:

“I was very happy with this song. I think as we were making it we were able to bring in those unique elements that give this song a lot of atmosphere. This song really made itself it some ways, which is special, that doesn’t happen very often.”

Formed in 2019, Molly Maguires is becoming an institution within their native New England since the pandemic restrictions began to ease. Despite the limited opportunity for touring for much of the time since their formation, the group, led by Sorensen and Meghan Earle, has kept extremely busy. They released their debut album Public Enemies, in April 2020, before following it up last year with their sophomore LP, That’s My Story. Then came The Mona Lisa Beverage EP earlier this year, which made it three first-rate releases in less than two years. When concerts again became a thing again, the band wasted no time in getting moving, as they have performed extensively throughout New England this year. Their music really speaks to the core of our shared values and experiences as people, which makes it no wonder why they are starting to catch on so much.
