We typically liken “groovy” music to something fast-paced, upbeat, and very danceable. But you don’t need to be travelling a mile a minute to fully embrace the “groove,” as you’ll recognize on almost sex’s brand new single, “Desist.” The track moves at a steady pace, never really speeding up or slowing down but satisfying that appetite in you for something to vibe and chill out to.

“Desist” blends together a lot of sounds, past and present, from nu-disco, to alternative rock, to more modern funk music. It acts as the lead single from the quintet’s brand new EP, which they are readying for a 2023 release.

Discussing the song, their intentions behind it, and how it changed while it was being recorded, the band says:

“Since the first demo, ‘Desist’ was always meant to be a forceful, upbeat foil to the vast majority of our previous releases. It just so happens that almost every time we write a song, the end result is down to mid-tempo with a plaintive and resigned vibe. We really wanted to showcase our untapped penchant for danceable, pulsating groove-writing on this song, and the rest of our upcoming sophomore EP. We pulled a lot of inspiration from some of the really fresh sounds coming from the nu-disco movement, alongside some nostalgic mid-aughts riff-rock on this single.”

Based in Brooklyn, New York, and led by singer and songwriter Nick Louis, almost sex would classify themselves as an alt-pop outfit, despite their eclectic sound. There’s a moodiness to their sound, emphasized by their highly textured production and bedroom pop and alternative folk influences. Louis is capably backed up by a group of talented bandmates, including producer and multi-instrumentalist Ken Helmlinger, percussionist Sam Gautier, guitarist Darrel Norrel, and keyboardist Zach Jennings.

With another new single coming next month, and the new EP coming in the new year, there will be much more new music to groove to very soon.

Show Dates:

11/01 – Baby’s Alright, New York City, NY (w/ The Aberdeen)
