Vein.FM – ‘This World Is Going To Ruin You’ [Album Review]
Do Boston hardcore crew Vein.FM meet the expectations on “The World Is Going To Ruin You”? Check out our thoughts here…
Since their errorzone debut album started to pick up interest outside the underground metal and hardcore scene, there has been no stopping Boston hardcore punks Vein.FM with their seething metallic rage quickly becoming impossible to ignore. Well, fast forward to 2022 and the band is about to drop This World Is Going To Ruin You, one of the most anticipated albums of the year. This being the case, the million-dollar question is “have the Boston outfit matched that anticipation?”
Of course, they have! From the moment a mildly disturbing female voice heralds the start of the violent, abrasive “Welcome Home,” there can be no doubt that The World Is Going To Ruin is going to be a brutal experience. Having announced their return in chaotic style, the rest of the record offers no respite. Spitting white-hot shards of metallic hardcore, Vein.FM is the most exciting and the most dangerous band on the planet at the moment as savage onslaughts like “The Killing Womb” and “Lights Out” show. However, while chaotic, vicious hardcore beats at the heart of this record, there is so much more to this sonic assault than that.
The kind of record that will give you nightmares, the Boston band rein in the battery for the creepy-as-fuck “Wherever You Are,” a haunting, droning display. It’s moments like these that not only show the depth and variety on this record but also how Vein.FM is not afraid to step outside the box. Built upon a spine of noise and chaotic hardcore, the use of electronics and samples, have seen their sound compared to the darker tones utilized by Slipknot while the appearance of Geoff Rickley from Thursday on the jittery “Magazine Beach” and rapper Bones on the dark souled “Orgy In The Morgue” show how open-minded and boundary-destroying this band can be.
Ending with the utterly terrifying “Funeral Sound,” this seven-minute album closer is laced with haunting piano passages and that sinister female voice only broken up by a mid-section of crushing, suffocating hardcore. The perfect example of how Vein.FM has ripped up the hardcore blueprint, “Funeral Sound” brings the brutal album crashing to a stunning finale. Two months into 2022 and heavy music has spat out some incredible records already but now Vein.FM has come along with The World Is Going To Ruin You and simply left the competition for dust.
