Song Premiere: Stay Bright with Safari Room’s Latest, “Your City Doesn’t Love You”
Music, but rock n’ roll specifically, is the ultimate uniter and, Safari Room is doing just that with the debut of “Your City Doesn’t Love You,” the lead single off the upcoming sophomore album, ‘ComplexHousePlants.’

Music, but rock n’ roll specifically, is the ultimate uniter. And after months of isolation, the boys in Safari Room are feeling like it’s time to bring a little unity to the table with their upcoming sophomore album, Complex House Plants. Due out on May 13th, we are helping to unveil the album’s fifth single, “Your City Doesn’t Love You,” a reflective song on new experiences and finding your way in a brand new life.
Moving to a new city can be a lonely experience, and lead singer and guitarist Alec Koukol’s lyrics contemplate what it’s like to do this when you’re young, hopeful, maybe a little naïve, and certainly not in any type of financial stability. When you’re in this situation, you’re basically starting from scratch and that can leave you feeling defeated. But even with the chips down, you can still perhaps find some comfort within your community, or even within yourself.
Commenting on the new track, Koukol states:
“I wrote this song about what it has felt like to move to a new city and not feel 100% at home. It was difficult to pick up everything and leave my childhood home, and it’s been even tougher to be in a place for almost a decade and still not feel like things have clicked. The last two years certainly haven’t helped! But this upcoming record has a lot to do with self love, and that’s where the resolution of this song lands despite its heavier lyrics. Whether or not the community, scene, populace of wherever aren’t warmed up to me yet, I still need to find that love within. And that’s no feat fully accomplished, something I’m still working on and hope people can join me on that journey for themselves.”
Complex House Plans, the follow-up to 2020’s Look Me Up When You Get There, was recorded in the first part of 2021 when people were really starting to lose their minds after spending months isolated, often alone. In response to this global predicament, the band decided it was time to get these thoughts out and stir the creative pot once more. The album’s overall theme is one of communities or units of people coming together, despite the odds, and pushing each other forward.
When the members of Safari Room actually got down to the business of writing, they set on the goal of expanding their sound from what it was on their debut. Not that anything needed changing, but this is a group of men intent on evolving. Complex House Plants will help you feel refreshed and revitalized, hopeful for the future, and thrilled to be moving on.
