Sanya N’Kanta Continues to Navigate “The Tide” with His Latest Music Video [Premiere]
No musical career is spared from trials and tribulations, but for Sanya N’kanta, you could say “The Tide” has really been turning in the right direction over the last couple of years.
No musical career is spared from trials and tribulations, but for Sanya N’kanta, you could say “The Tide” has really been turning in the right direction over the last couple of years. The singer-songwriter is back with his latest single and music video for “The Tide,” the next domino to fall in the lead up to the release of his latest studio album, Love Is Free, in early 2022.
Over the last couple of months, he has been whetting our appetites with the release of “Easy Baby” in July and “Highway Road” in August, both very well received songs with music videos that have, combined, over a million views. “The Tide” is a soulful, bluesy pop song that emphasizes one of Sanya’s greatest skills as a songwriter; his honest to god introspectiveness, as he pontificates on the many twists and turns that life can take.
In explaining more about what “The Tide” means to him, Sanya told us,
“Life isn’t always about swimming upstream, although it’s almost necessary for creating art that is outside the box. Sometimes, we need to relinquish control, forget perfection, and live in the moment floating downstream. The song is about how we choose to navigate the ebb and flow of life. We often have to decide to swim against or with the current to achieve our goals and desires.”
Co-produced by the great Chuck Alkazian (Soundgarden, Madonna, Tantric, The Romantics), Sanya has really put his best foot forward with Love Is Free, a grouping of songs that blur the distinction between musical genres. Originally born in Kingston, Jamaica, he moved with his family to the United States at the age of six. It turned out to be quite a traumatic experience for him, which has helped shape his point of view on race and social justice, quite evident within the lyrics he composes. Themes of struggle, healing, love, and light are intertwined within the truths he speaks and the experiences he shares.
Sanya is heavily influenced by rock, reggae, hip-hop, house music, and electro-pop, with an approach that is more focused on preserving and upholding songcraft, while not getting pinned down by preconceived notions of how his music should sound. With no inward limitations, his music comes off like a breath of fresh air, an artist who feels comfortable within his own musical skin.
