Ashley Zarah Makes Sure “Everybody Knows” the Truth in Her Newest Single
Dark-pop singer-songwriter, Ashley Zarah released her second single off of her upcoming LP, Better Mess, entitled “Everybody Knows.” The song is a serious take on the relationship featured in her last single, “My Boyfriend,” and touches on the disappointment and pain that comes from a lack of closure at the end of a relationship.
Zarah doesn’t keep to the traditional writing perspective in this single but rather sings from the other person’s point-of-view. When writing “Everybody Knows,” Zarah singled in on the apology she wished she would’ve received. “After the falling out of any relationship, the people directly involved are not the only ones affected,” Zarah said. “A whole community can get involved…word gets to them when the word is shocking enough.” Lyrics like “When I walk into the room I’m seeing pictures of you, painted on the faces of your friends that I knew” depict the shame that Zarah hoped the other person would feel for the things they had done.
While the song is mostly from the antagonist’s perspective, it takes a thrilling turn towards the end to show Zarah’s confidence in the truth. The music production switches up as well; evolving from an imaginary ballad to a loud, wide, and active anthem. The singer says she realized that defending this person’s reputation was crushing her truth and inhibiting her closure. Once again, Ashley Zarah provides fans with a deeply personal (and catchy) song that’s also relatable to common relationship experiences. “The song is about fact versus fiction, and knowing that truth and authenticity have the support of thousands while deceit limply holds the support of one,” Zarah said.
Ashley Zarah is an Iranian singer/songwriter and Dark-Pop performer hailing from Los Angeles, CA. Merging millennial pain and pop culture, she is convincing pop listeners to feel something real again, the way she felt during the emo wave in the early 2000s. As a young kid who struggled finding a group and culture to identify with, Zarah decided to invent a space of her own where all the beautifully complex were welcome; hence, the home of Dark-Pop.
While on scholarship at the highly prestigious art institution, Berklee College of Music, Zarah revealed herself to be both a prolific writer and expressive vocalist; though mostly sought after for her relatability and insightful lyric writing. She has since been featured on NPR’s “Buried Treasures,” BuzzMusic LA, GirlTalkHQ, Authority Magazine, JeJune Magazine, EDM Nations, and twice debuted on the world-renowned music editorial, The Hype Magazine. Her 2019 Middle-Eastern influenced 2-track single, Awake, will be featured in the upcoming LA indie film, Back In the No.
An advocate for mental health, suicide prevention, and gender equality; Zarah is on a mission to teach and heal her generation to speak their truths and enjoy their lives rather than simply surviving them; proving to audiences that no pain is worth the disposal of a life. Zarah’s highly anticipated project, the Better Mess – LP, is currently in post-production for release in the Fall of 2020, leading with fan-favorite singles “My Boyfriend,” and “Everybody Knows.”
