Toronto indie-folk artist Only August recently debuted his heartfelt, shimmering style with the inaugural single “The Rain”, which dropped March 13, 2020. In the vein of City and Colour and the mellower end of Kings of Leon, sole member Andrew Reinhardt deftly blends the energy of indie rock with rustic folk tendencies, allowing his sharp vocal work to sit in the spotlight. With a full-length due in the summer of 2020, Only August is primed to make waves in the Canadian indie scene as he continues to showcase a refined ear for melody and a penchant for snappy, propulsive tempo.

To help prime audiences for future material, Reinhardt is readily offering his debut single as a free download, and he now joins us with a few words on the song’ conception: “I wrote the song with my wife, and she felt like a lot of my older songs were sort of about loss and the hardships of love and giving up. Which really wasn’t a true reflection of our current relationship or our strengths. She felt like I needed a happier song and one that personally she could relate to as a listener.”

Reinhardt continues with, “‘The Rain’ is a metaphor about the growth of a relationship. The simple care and nurture that is required, just as a plant needs rain to drink, sunshine to grow, sometimes shade, or space, if required. It doesn’t have to be complicated. You should provide your partner with the care they require to grow and be the best version of themselves. So, like a flower, you can too enjoy their beauty.”

The tune itself is a nimbly-crafted piece bursting with broad musicality, which is strikingly evident in the song’s stripped-down version in the above video. Get lost in Andrew’s voice, enjoy a tune that is at both thoughtful-yet-frenetic, and start saving a spot on your record shelf – or, more likely, on your smartphone – for the work of Only August.
