Jeff Beam is an indie rocker from Maine, Portland whose hypnotic brand of music lands in the Tame Impala realm of sleek psych-rock. His latest release, the nine-track, self-titled Jeff Beam, recently dropped on April 17th and gives listeners a perfect view of his technical skills and creative idiosyncrasies. His style is familiar and comforting, yet personalized and inflected with a flair that can only be described as very Jeff Beam. Blending political commentary with transcendental quests for human knowledge, this is music for the thinking fan, with the chops to back up the headiness.

As a gift for inquisitive listeners, Jeff is now offering the album’s fourth track, “Disarray,” as a free song download. On the precise, meticulous tune, Jeff lets us know where he’s coming from:

“I wrote ‘Disarray’ in a bout of despair with America’s political climate. The song has kind of taken on a new meaning with the COVID-19 pandemic; but as I type this, Bernie Sanders has just suspended his presidential campaign, so as someone who was lucky enough to perform with the Senator at his rallies, I’m back to square one with my political depression. Normally I’d like to project a more optimistic outlook, but I think it’s also important to give despair its chance to play out, unrepressed. It’s ok to spend a time in disarray, just don’t set up shop there forever.”

“Disarray” carries listeners with a minimalist drum beat and layered vocals, careening and crooning with inflected repetition until the bass joins and the drums grow more varied and complex. As guitars chime in and the vocal manipulation takes on a wholly new form, the tune climbs to a powerful, beautifully-schizophrenic peak before breaking into a gradual comedown. Let’s face it, we’re all in disarray right now, and misery loves company. Download and cherish the tune; you won’t regret it.
