Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Get the Money” [Album Review]

My introduction to Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders came recently via Nikki Sixx’s Instagram. As Sixx quoted, “It could be the soundtrack to any great Quentin Tarantino movie.” Unbeknownst to me, the Riders have been ‘a thing’ since their 2006 self-titled release, with a 2010 follow up, Red Light Fever.

My introduction to Hawkins himself came in the form of Alanis Morrissette’s “You Oughta Know” video, released at what I like to think was the beginning of the end of MTV, which is now reality TV with no intention of looking back. Nevertheless, I eyeballed the sudden popularity of Ms. Morissette and noticed this Muppet on drums flailing and frothing away in the background as I spoke to myself – and legitimately once told Dave Grohl – “This guy is fucking incredible.” You oughta know we can skip the Foo Fighters preamble as Taylor is now a household name. What I wasn’t clued in on was the majesty he’s created with the Coattail Riders.

Sometimes you just have to say “I Really Blew It.”

With a who’s who of celeb guests on Get the Money, including Dave Grohl, Duff McKagan, Nancy Wilson, Perry Farrell, Chrissie Hynde, LeAnn Rimes, and Roger Taylor, Hawkins and crew have created a melting pot of great desert rock combined with pop sensibilities, a la Queens of the Stone Age, Brant Bjork, and, hell, I’ll throw in one-part John Garcia with two parts Orquesta del Desierto into this wax of stoner boner.

Get the Money has that sticky-sweet sickness of Palm Springs billowing around it. This is dank and stinking up my speakers as I write. If you’ve never ‘tripped’ in Palm Springs, Twenty Nine Palms or Joshua Tree, I highly suggest it… or simply buy Get the Money and get yer soul search on.

Go on, “Get the Money” with Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders.

I was born in the late 60's amongst hippies and bikers. Cut my teeth on 70's rock and roll surrounded by motorheads and potheads, and in the 80's spread my wings and flourished as a guitarist. In the 90's I became a semi-professional musician knocking on death metals door, as well as entering the world as a freelance writer. In the 2000's I moved to Hollywood and watched the music industry crumble in front of my dreams and then took a break. Now, in the early 2020s I'm ready to rock again… or swing, blues, bluegrass, country, jazz, classical, etc. Its not so much a job to me anymore, but a great way to express myself and have a good time, and, "I know, its only rock and roll but I like it".
