Why “Are You Leaving?” Before Hearing FEENY’s Hot New Single? [Song Premiere]
New Jersey’s rock quartet Feeny will release a new full-length album in September but are now beginning to tease the music by debuting the lead single “Are You Leaving?”
New Brunswick, New Jersey-based rock quartet Feeny are a fun, independent group to which you should be paying attention. Their latest album and full-length follow-up to 2016’s Jesse Cannon-produced No Beauty in Routine, is slated for a September release with the forthcoming album’s lead single “Are You Leaving?” now available on major streaming services, and right here! Head below to stream the tune and be sure to find a copy/stream on Apple Music:, Spotify and Bandcamp, the latter of which is where you can also find Feeny’s merch.
Speaking of the brand new single, guitarist and vocalist Matthew Koerner said, “Much of my writing focuses on my fixation with memory and how it twists and turns and sweetens as you grow ever distant from it. This song deals with the futility of clinging to intangible pasts and futures. It contains a thread of someone wanting to know an answer to a question but stifled with fear of knowing the answer. The protagonist knows there is no hope for staying together but until they force the issue, they will stay together. Despite this, they can’t live in limbo so by the end of the song they finally ask directly ‘are you leaving?’”
No more bad puns. We promise. Just listen to “Are You Leaving?” now:
Rounded out by bassist and vocalist Joe Macphee, drummer Jordan Miller, and guitarist Matthew Mahler, Feeny (also stylized as F E E N Y) has been in the works since some of the members were learning their instruments back as high school friends. Originally a three-piece leaning heavily on their pop-punk influences, the band self-recorded their debut Winter of Our Disconnect EP and subsequently set out to perform an amazing 60 gigs in their first active year.
After returning home, ready to lay down new tunes that would become 2016’s No Beauty In Routine, the musicians felt it was time for a change and began pushing their sound into new territory, incorporating elements of post-rock, hip hop, and emo. This change also required more help and resulted in Koerner and MacPhee’s old friend, Matthew Mahler joining the gang to flush out their live sound. The 2018 single “Puzo” was the first fruits of the foursome’s creative efforts and now we’re going to see much more when “Are You Leaving?” is followed by the above-mentioned full-length, recorded with Adam Cichocki of Timber Studios (Gatherers, Fire is Motion).
Upcoming Tour Dates:
08/30 – Flemington DIY – Flemington, NJ
09/07 – Creep Records – Philadelphia, PA
09/08 – Gold Sounds – Brooklyn, NY
