Due out on April 13th, 2019, via Hand of Doom Records and Narshardaa Records, as he turned back towards the eye of the storm is just shy of fifty-two minutes of doomy post-metal courtesy of Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany-based trio, Codeia. (Fans and fans-to-be may find digital copies on Bandcamp and physical copies, including vinyl and CD bundles, at either of the aforementioned labels here and Bandcampnow.

Commenting on their thundering new release, the band collectively stated, “as he turned back towards the eye of the storm is the result of one year of intense songwriting and constant refinement. It is the second part of a trilogy that will form one cohesive record title. Our goal was to yet again push boundaries and incorporate different styles and sounds without compromising on the fact that every song needs to be playable live as a three-piece band. Therefore, in the studio, it was mandatory for us to record all of the loops as we play them live on stage and capture that sound and feeling.”

This album was the only thing he heard as he turned back towards the eye of the storm

You may be wondering how a four-track release could be considered a full-length album, but there aren’t many bands quite like Germany’s Codeia, a group who packed 52 glorious minutes into only four songs (74 minutes into the five-track vinyl version)! Born in Baden-Wurttemberg in 2016 with a sound that rests alongside the likes of Neurosis, Isis, Rosetta and Cult of Luna, as he turned back towards the eye of the storm showcases Codeia’s power and talent in creating engrossing, long-form musical passages that really stretch beyond the boundaries of conventional “songs.”

Post-metal remains the foundation of the new record, but the compositions flow beyond the boundaries of different sonic pallets. It’s almost like “listening” to a book series rather than just simple, foundational songs with chapters that highlight the range of Codeia’s influences. as he turned back towards the eye of the storm accomplishes in pushing the limits of musical discovery that really breaks any perceived ceiling that exists within the boundaries of conventional heavy metal music.
