Philly garage punk rockers RunHideFight may be new, but the members are anything but beginners. Familiarize yourself with the band via our premiere for their new single “He’s a Jerk.” The group is led by local area rock veteran Geeta Dalal Simons who was eager to get back into the scene after spending several years raising her two young children. Interestingly enough, she is the daughter of Indian American scientists and was raised in West Virginia in the midst of high racial tensions.
This upbringing drew Simons to an interest in both academics and music at a young age and, if you’re trying to characterize RunHideFight’s sound, you can look to early Cheap Trick and Thee Headcoatees. The group is rounded out by other Philly music scene vets Christine Weiser (formerly of Mae Pang) on bass and Jon Kois (Three 4 Tens, Marah) on drums.
We don’t care what you say but this guy, “He’s a Jerk”!
Commenting on “He’s a Jerk,” Geeta left us with these thoughts: “Two main things about this song: one is that there are a hell of a lot of he-jerks all up in my media these days. Let’s just say that if you’re as over it as I am, playing this song can provide some much-needed stress relief and fun. The song begins with a Joan Jett meets a wildcat in a dark alley shriek that I cultivated through equal parts ‘joyful love of punk rock’ and ‘frustration at the chaotic state of the world.’ The second thing about that song is that it’s another tribute to my love of a good 12-string melody. I believe I used a Rickenbacker 12-string in the studio, but live, I play it on my custom double neck 24-string 12 electric/12 electric sitar.”
She continued, “Although I love playing 12-string in half of the songs in our set (and electric sitar on some), that unless I wanted to continuously swap out guitars, I’d have to get innovative…and as I’m generally inspired by my guitar hero Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick, I thought about his 5 necked checkerboard guitar. So I commissioned Chris DiPinto of DiPinto Guitars to make the 24-string checkerboard double neck beast that you see me playing in the video for the B-side of our debut single.”
Upcoming Show Dates:
