Meaning “egg”, Cirque Du Soliel brought their Ovo show to Leeds First Direct Arena for the first of a multiple show run in Yorkshire and, as you always get with any Cirque show, the ninety plus minute performance was as bonkers as it was breathtaking.

Set around the insect world and three key characters (and the egg), the plot of the love story was played out to an audience who laughed, cheered, smiled and, at times, looked downright puzzled at what was unfolding before their very eyes. All three characters looked fantastic and, while they may have communicated in nothing more than a series of strange sounds, the connection between the three was delightful to watch. The second half saw two of the three key characters drag one lucky fan into the limelight with her becoming the star of the show for a few minutes in what was a gloriously entertaining routine.

Let’s face it though, at times the Cirque story takes a back seat as the creators leave us on the edge of our seats with a series of breathtaking acts. Ovo was no different with high-wire acts, trapeze artists, trampoline acts and more eliciting gasps around the arena as this unique, magical experience demonstrated exactly why so many people across the planet have fallen under Cirque’s spell.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
