Indie pop heavyweights Fitz and The Tantrums just wrapped up a run with Mikky Ekko featuring a few dates with indie rockers X Ambassadors. We caught up with them as they came to play the picturesque seaside venue Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine on a beautiful, warm evening.

After Mikky Ekko got the night started with their unique brand of alternative rock, New York’s X Ambassadors took to the stage and kicked things off with “Unsteady.” From there they went straight into hit “Jungle,” with an impressive saxophone solo from frontman Sam Harris. Harris is a multi-instrumentalist, throwing on a bass guitar at times during their set when not preoccupied with leaping around the stage. Their set would go on to include more hits, including “Loveless,” “Hang On,” and “Fear.”

The show happened to fall on the same day as Portland’s Pride Festival, prompting Harris to spend a few moments talking about how everyone should be able to live the way they want and love whomever they want. As their performance came to an end, a brilliantly beautiful sunset shone across the water above the seaside venue. Although the current tour is over for X Ambassadors, you can catch them in July and August playing dates across the US and Canada!

At last, with the sun now set, Fitz and The Tantrums emerged onto a fog-enveloped stage to kick off one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. They started their set off with catchy tracks “Get Right Back” and “Spark,” getting the audience dancing along from the very start. The combination of frontman Michael Fitzpatrick’s strong voice coupled with vocalist Noelle Scagg’s soulful vocals was intoxicating.

Fitzpatrick and his cohorts really took things up a level four songs in with fan-favorite “Out of My League,” which became a giant sing-along with the thousands in the crowd. Their performance would go on to include more hits including, “Fool,” and a cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” before an encore that was punctuated by a confetti canon blast featuring mega hits “HandClap” and “The Walker.”
