Anthrax (w/ Killswitch Engage, Havok) @ London Music Hall (London, ON) on January 26, 2018 [Photos & Show Review]
As tours go, metal fans have nothing at all to complain about when a bill boasting two great metal bands like Anthrax and Killswitch Engage (with support from Havok) comes to town at this ticket price point.
Anthrax and Killswitch Engage are taking Killthrax on the road once again in 2018, stopping off in an assortment of marketplaces they didn’t hit on their first outing under this tour package in 2017. Last night’s London Music Hall performance was the second night of this leg of the tour.
As tours go, metal fans have nothing at all to complain about when a bill boasting two great metal bands like Anthrax and Killswitch (with support from a band like Havok) comes to town at this ticket price point. Anthrax and Killswitch alternate the ‘headlining’ position – but this is purely optical, as each band adheres to a similar 70-75 minute live set. Havok blew everyone’s minds with their relentless Slayer-esque display of modern thrash material. Killswitch cherry-picked a selection of material spanning their discography that culminated in their live rendition of Dio’s “Holy Diver”, complete with guest vocals by Joey Belladonna.
The London Music Hall stage was too small for Anthrax. Don’t get me wrong, it was AMAZING seeing the band in a room this size, but Anthrax tends to fill out stages four times as big. Scott Ian didn’t have the room to levy his signature scissor kick leap during “Caught In A Mosh” tonight. Charlie Benante (king of the blast beats!!!) along with Frank Bello, Joey Belladonna, Jonathan Donais and the aforementioned Scott Ian stirred the crowd up into a wintery mosh over the course of twelve songs. A bonus this evening saw the resurrection of the mighty “Medusa” this evening, a definite treat for the ears of Anthrax fans, harkening back to the classic 1985 Spreading The Disease album.
I’ve never seen the London Music Hall as packed as it was this evening. It felt over-capacity as I struggled to get to the back of the room to pee. I’m sure it wasn’t – there must have just been an overage of bigger guys at this show. The audience was mostly male, and everyone felt really tall for some reason. I realized that tonight was the first time I’d seen Anthrax since For All Kings came out – and hearing some of the tracks from that album live was worth the cost of admission alone. “Breathing Lightning” is a killer live song.
