Along with Slade and the Pogues there is one other band who really herald the start of Christmas each year and that’s Lowestoft rockers The Darkness who are in town promoting their new album Pinewood Smiles.

Peppering their set with a number of tracks from the album such as “All The Pretty Girls” and “Southern Trains”, the quartet, once seen as the future of British rock, were well up for a party in Leeds, even for a damp November Monday night, with frontman Justin Hawkins even requesting the air conditioning in the venue be turned off so everyone could get nice and sweaty.

On or off it didn’t really matter though as the Yorkshire audience, led by the catsuit-clad Hawkins ensured the we headed into the Christmas period with a smile on our faces as the likes of “Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)” and that song brought the night to a raucous conclusion. So, love ’em or loathe ’em, you’ve got to admit that if you want a Christmas party with plenty of cheese, a bit of raunch and soundtrack of camp, lyrca-covered rock, who better for your host than The Darkness?

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
