PVRIS (w/ Lights, Flint Eastwood) @ House of Blues (Boston, MA) on October 12, 2017 [Photos & Show Review]

Getting to see your hometown heroes headline a show is one thing, but seeing them do that and sell out a huge venue? That’s something truly awesome! PVRIS fans in Boston were treated to just that on October 12th as the band made their way home to play a packed House of Blues with support from Lights and opener Flint Eastwood.

The night began with an energetic set from Flint Eastwood, who, sporting some interesting and somewhat unorthodox dance moves, got the crowd hyped early on.

Toronto indie/alt-pop star, Lights was up next, emerging with the track “Skydiving” from her latest record Skin & Earth which just came out last month. She didn’t have to work too hard to win the crowd over–it turns out many PVRIS fans are also Lights fans. Her set would go on to feature “From All Sides”–a bonus track from 2014’s Little Machines, as well as several other tracks from that record including the infectiously catchy “Speeding,” “Same Sea,” “Running With The Boys,” “Portal,” and “Up We Go.” For those who are familiar with her newer record, the set also featured “Moonshine,” “Savage,” and “Giants.” While I was super bummed I didn’t get to hear “Fight Club,” also off the new record, Lights totally put on a stellar performance that was fun to watch (she brought all the “mom” dance moves). Personally, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a headlining tour in 2018 that will take her to slightly smaller, more intimate venues!

After a bit of a wait for a complete stage changeover, PVRIS emerged and kicked straight into “Heaven.” Immediately, the energy in the House of Blues was off the charts, with fans crowdsurfing and singing along with frontwoman Lynn Gunn‘s every word. The set drew heavily from their latest release All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell–in fact they pretty much played the entire record, minus one or two tracks–as well as several from 2014’s White Noise, including “St. Patrick,” and “My House.”

The production on this run is truly incredible, with LED panels and street lights illuminating the band as they perform. On two occasions during the set, Gunn hopped behind a second drum kit that was set up on stage right and proceeded to rock out with touring drummer Justin Nace, much to the crowd’s delight. About mid-way through the band paused to bring out guitarist Alex Babinksi‘s brother who got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend right then and there on the stage. While it wasn’t confirmed, I’m pretty sure she said yes–the crowd seemed to think so, cheering them on. The band closed the night out with the anthemic “No Mercy.” You can catch PVRIS on tour with Lights and Flint Eastwood through October 22!
