The hottest festival tour of the summer, Vans Warped Tour, invaded Camden, New Jersey on Friday, July 7th. Thousands of fans braved the humidity and temperatures in the mid-80s to see their favorite bands playing across seven stages set up in the BB&T Pavilion‘s amphitheater and parking lots. Each day’s schedule is always a crapshoot in terms of the set times, but on this day, things got heavy early on with Carnifex opening up the Monster Energy Mutant South stage. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen such a heavy band so early in the day (they went on around 12:45).
Thereafter, it was off to I Prevail at the Journeys Left Foot stage next, joining the throngs making their way there (it was pretty crowded), I enjoyed catching a bit of I Prevail’s set before running off again to see punk band Bad Cop/Bad Cop. This all-female band blew my mind with an energy-packed set at the Hard Rock stage.
Up next, the crushingly-heavy metalcore band Silent Planet had also had a huge crowd at the Mutant North stage, with frontman Garrett Russell getting up close and personal with the crowd more than once during their set. As their performance ended, After The Burial took to the Mutant South stage. Sylar was next (on the North stage), followed by The Acacia Strain on the Mutant South stage, where frontman Vincent Bennett called for “the world’s smallest circle pit.”
After that, it was off for some melodic power-pop from Courage My Love at the Full Sail stage, before heading for some hard-hitting melodic hardcore from Being As An Ocean back at the Mutant North stage. I thrashed away the rest of the afternoon with Municipal Waste at the Hard Rock stage.
(Stay tuned for part 2 from Camden, NJ!)
