Fast Romantics – “American Love” [Album Review]
The third effort from Toronto’s Fast Romantics is chock full of the type of indie rock tunes that are guaranteed to get them plenty of air play on “alt-rock” radio.
The third effort from Toronto’s Fast Romantics is chock full of the type of indie rock tunes that are guaranteed to get them plenty of air play on “alt-rock” radio. In fact, “Julia” and “Why We Fight” have already become staples and have doubtlessly turned up on many streaming service subscribers recommended list. It’s not hard to hear why; “Why We Fight” delivers a message about persevering no matter how many hardships life throws at us, something that rings true during the uncertain times we are living in.
“Julia” on the other hand is a fun and catchy love song with a cool video the band shot using a green screen and vintage footage of Fred Astaire. The rest of the album is equally strong with the band delivering on the promise of their 2013 record Afterlife Blues. Admittedly, it does stumble slightly with the lead-off “Everybody’s Trying to Steal Your Heart” but what follows more than makes up for any missteps. Vocalist Kirty brings her own unique vibe to Fast Romantics music. A talented singer/songwriter in her own right, she provides a perfect foil to singer Matthew Angus, especially when the two play off of each other on songs like “Radio Waves”. She even gets her own chance to shine in the spotlight on “How Long is This Gonna Last”.
The band also pays tribute to their home province on “Alberta”. American Love may not be a flawless collection of songs but Fast Romantics come pretty damn close, showcasing a band that’s on the way up.
