Shallow Side – “One” [EP] [Album Review]

No bells and whistles here, just some really good, at times heavy-hitting, rock and roll with an edge.

If you have read any of my past reviews you will surely know that I am not the biggest fan of the hard rock genre. It is not that I don’t like hard rock, I just feel that the genre is too cluttered with sub-par bands and, for the most part, at least as far as I am concerned, everything sounds the same. So, it was with great surprise that I stumbled upon Shallow Side.

This Alabama-based band caught my attention right out of the gate with, “We Roll” and, to be honest, I was stoked to hear more of the record. This is not your average, run-of-the-mill rock and roll band. This is a well-produced hard rock record with enough riffs and melody to satisfy any rocker. It’s even got a bit of edginess that will appeal to fans of heavier music.

All six songs are short, clocking in around the 3-minute mark but don’t let the time fool you, they all pack a punch. Even the Styx remake, “Renegade,” is perfectly done, they really do justice to this cover and it fits right in amongst the band’s other tracks.

No bells and whistles here, just some really good, at times heavy-hitting, rock and roll with an edge. Lots of smoking guitar work, big thundering drums and as mentioned earlier, big time melodies. I suggest giving this one a spin, it is pretty darn good.
