Metallica – “Atlas, Rise!” [Song Review]
Though the song lacks the meticulous ferocity of previous single “Hardwired,” it is still a solid addition to what is shaping up to be a promising album.

As ravenous anticipation builds for their tenth studio album, the legendary Metallica have blessed us with their record’s third single, “Atlas, Rise!”. An extended, patient intro features addictive guitar riffs that, though not quite headbanging material, will still get your feet instantly tapping the carpet. Hetfield’s vocals soon come in, revealing solid range and working beautifully with the guitar, the two sometimes soaring, sometimes dancing around each other. Next comes an instrumental section in which Hetfield and Hammett layer their guitars to gorgeous, symphonic effect.
And what better complement to a symphonic vibe than a mythological theme? The song’s lyrics meditate on the plight of Atlas, the Titan from Greek mythology condemned to hold the entire Earth on his back. The scope may initially seem cosmic and abstract, but the invitation for Atlas to break free and rise up feels like perfect material for an inspired fist in the air at a Metallica show.
Though the song lacks the meticulous ferocity of previous single “Hardwired,” it is still a solid addition to what is shaping up to be a promising album.
