Looking for some good ‘ol fashioned rock ‘n roll, with a hint of blues and a light side of political angst? Look no further than The Boy Who Died Wolf. The Boy Who Died Wolf is the much-anticipated follow-up to 2015’s Mister Asylum, the full-length masterpiece that launched Highly Suspect into notoriety early last year.
A little more pensive than prior releases, The Boy Who Died Wolf packs the passion of Mister Asylum but with a sense of deliberate calm and control. Tracks like “My Name Is Human” and “Look Alive Stay Alive” carry the same energy and grit as “Lydia” and “Bloodfeather” (from Mister Asylum), while other singles like “Wolf” and “Send Me An Angel” are more brooding and withdrawn (yet still undeniably rock-able). More ambient tracks like “Serotonia” showcase the variety and versatility of Highly Suspect’s classic sound.
However, the golden jewel off The Boy Who Died Wolf is clearly “Viper Strike” — an aggressively political anthem, which dropped on November 9th, the day after the U.S. presidential election. According to a statement from Johnny Stevens (lead vocals, guitar) on the band’s Facebook, this was very much an intentional move:
“In light of today’s events we think it’s appropriate to leak this song. Remember to love each other in this time. We call upon you to help those who are suffering and protect the rights of our fellow human beings that have worked so hard to get them. We always have and always will fight for equality, in whatever capacity we can. Count your blessings and show no fear. This song is called ‘Viper Strike’. It is not for the faint of heart. MCID.”
“Viper Strike” earns its name, boasting lyrics such as, “We’re all equal / except for you / ’cause you’re an asshole, with an ugly point of view/ And your insecurities / Can’t you see, they’re driving me insane / Maybe one day / Love will conquer all / But in the mean time, you can try to build your walls / Our generation / We’re taking over / Hope we don’t die with that / Chip on your shoulder / Maybe one day” among other more poignant lines specifically condemning racism and homophobia. It’s clear where Highly Suspect stands when it comes to inequality, and they want to make sure EVERYONE knows it. It’s a very commendable move given the current political climate and, I’ve got to say, I have even more respect for them now after watching them publicly stand by their beliefs, despite backlash.
All in all, The Boy Who Died Wolf is an excellent record, showcasing the fervor, depth, and talent of Highly Suspect. Fans of previous releases will definitely enjoy this album, and it will quickly win over the ears and hearts of newcomers listening in for the first time. So, what are you waiting for? Pick up The Boy Who Died Wolf, kick back, and enjoy. It’s exactly what you need to hear today, tomorrow, and for weeks to come.
