Schemata Theory – “Networks” [EP] [Album Review]

You know those gigs where there are about four or five bands on the bill, usually four unknown bands and the headliner, and one of those unknown bands just blows you away? Well, I had one of those moments a year or so ago. Can’t remember who else was playing off the top of my head, but there was a local-ish metalcore band on there who quite literally left the room slack-jawed.

That band was Schemata Theory and you could tell back then that this was a group who could go on to bigger things. As is usually the case though, things have been very quiet from the Berkshire metalcore band until now. Returning with a new single, this three-track EP most definitely shows that this is an act who have got ‘it’. They’ve got that magic something that, when they combine, they make really magical heavy music. Harsh like Earthtone9, beautifully complex like Deftones, twisted like Sikth, Networks is a real taster for what this band can offer.

Networks may only be three tracks long but, as an appetizer, the twin-vocal, beautifully epic, technical metal assault smashed out on tracks like “Horror Show” certainly proves that, while they may have been out of the limelight for a while, they’re back with an impressive statement of intent. Hopefully when they return to the studio with ex-Sikth frontman and metal producer extraordinaire, Justin Hill, the end result could be one of the most amazing things you’re likely to hear from a British metal band.
