It’s been seven years since Canadian singer/songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk has released a studio album, but now she’s back with her sixth, called Hard Sail.

This album signals a departure for the songstress – gone are the soft and mellow melodies that her 90’s fans came to love. What remains are her signature vocals, with personal lyrics and intricate piano work under layers of different musical influences and styles.

From the instant you press play, you can hear the difference. Title track Hard Sail (one of my faves) has a jazz/soul quality to it that I really love. It also has some really great drum work, giving it that extra punch.

All I Got, one of two singles off the album is a catchy, dance-worthy, upbeat love letter filled with claps and bass.  It’s a fun track to listen to.

And for those looking for something a little quieter, you’ll love the string-laden I Love You. Simple, raw and emotional, this is my absolute favorite track. Kreviazuk’s vocals are definitely on display here and she masters them gracefully.  I listened to this song so many times that I finally lost count. It’s beautiful.

Hard Sail is just that, a journey on the waves of Kreviazuk’s life over the past 7 years. A discovery of love, strength, and resilience; it’s clear she hasn’t made it to her destination as yet, but enjoys the process of getting there.
