ERRA – “Drift” [Album Review]
With Drift, ERRA is well positioned to break through and enter the next big stage of their career as a band.
ERRA’s latest album Drift is a milestone for the band. Having closely followed the rise (and fall) of many Sumerian Records acts, ERRA has always remained loaded with talent and potential, perpetually on the brink of self-discovery. On Drift, they have matured their sound and finally tapped into that perfect mix of prog, metalcore and ambient rock. Complemented by a few lineup changes, notably the addition of ex-Texas In July vocalist JT Cavey, Drift is led by a fluid blend of clean vocals and screams as well as an increasingly complex musical composition throughout.
“Luminesce” starts the album off strong with a winding solo that echoes all the way through, joined by mosh-worthy riffs and powerful vocals, eclipsed by infectious lyrics. “Orchid” stands out as one of the album’s heavier tracks. Dominated by lamenting lyrics dealing with finding oneself and a perfectly timed breakdown, this emotional song will give you goosebumps.
The title track features an alternative, gypsy-style groove amid heavy, progressive, down-tuned riffs that rise and fall with the song’s story—perhaps a perfect example of how far ERRA’s sound has come. With Drift, ERRA is well positioned to break through and enter the next big stage of their career as a band, and I for one cannot wait to see how far they go.
