Between Waves – “Paperchain” [EP] [Album Review]
While it is still early days for this Welsh collective, Paperchain displays a lot to be excited about so, as the old saying goes, watch this space.
Formed from the ashes of Welsh band Hondo Maclean, Between Waves are a very different kettle of fish altogether. Dealing in more melodic, haunting alternative rock from previous incarnation, Paperchain is a solid taster from a band who, if we’re going off these five tracks alone, are heading in the right direction.
Sitting on the darker side of the alt-rock fence, the female-fronted outfit ply their material with epic melodies, haunting vocals and driving metallic guitars. Fronted by Helen Page, the Welsh group have a vocalist who fits their dark, gritty rock perfectly. As the band blend soothing passages with harder alt-rock riffing, Page’s vocals float effortlessly over the top of the material whether it be the soaring “Paperchain” or the calmer “Fathoms,” a track which eases this EP to a dramatic conclusion.
While it is still early days for this Welsh collective, Paperchain displays a lot to be excited about so, as the old saying goes, watch this space.
