Cairo has been kicking it in some shape or form since 2011, and I finally had the opportunity to catch them live in their current state, at 102.1 The Edge‘s Jingle Bell Rock Discovery Series at The Mod Club this past Saturday night, supported by Birds Of Bellwoods and Blue Sky Miners.

I was lucky enough to catch up with the band briefly before the show, and they all seemed pretty carefree and relaxed, which came through in their performance. Lead singer Nate Daniels set the tone by starting the show a few feet in front of the stage, surrounded by fans. It was quiet, vulnerable even, and displayed the character of both the band and Nate as a artist.

Cairo’s set was amazing.  The band played tracks from their latest album ‘A History Of Reasons‘ (among others) and were truly fun to watch.  It was obvious they were having a good time, and seemed inspired to connect with their audience. I was also impressed with Caitlin Grieve‘s violin playing.  Unfamiliar with their live show and not sure what to expect, it was a nice surprise.

An extra added highlight was definitely their cover of Whitney Houston‘s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody‘ which included special guests Terra Lightfoot and Jacquie Neville of The Balconies. The audience loved it, and when a band gets a cover right like Cairo, it really adds to the atmosphere of the show.

I had a great time and I would encourage you to see Cairo if you haven’t had the opportunity to do so already. Special thanks to Strut Entertainment for the invite, and for a great night out.
