102.1 the Edge in collaboration with Molson Canadian, held the 2015 CASBY Awards this past Thursday evening at The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto. Considered to be one of Canada’s largest alternative rock stations, The Edge has been hosting the CASBYs for years.

The ceremony started in 1981 as an alternative to the Juno Awards and were originally called the U-Knows.  Past CASBY winners include: Alexisonfire, Arcade Fire, Billy Talent and Sam Roberts . Winners are chosen entirely by the fans through nationwide voting, and are considered to represent the best in new Canadian rock music.

Performances were broadcast live on 102.1 the Edge and online at www.edge.ca and included performances by: USS, Yukon Blonde, Monster Truck, Young Empires, The Zolas and The Ivory Hours, winners of this years ‘Edge Next Big Thing‘ contest.

I’ve recently become a fan of Young Empires and was excited to check out their live performance. It was clear they were a fan favorite, and opened with ‘The Gates,‘ which has garnered a lot of radio play recently.

The 2015 Casby nominees included: Dear Rogue, Yukon Blonde, Death From Above 1979, You + Me, Mother Mother, Young Empires, Alessia Cara, Arkells, USS, Alvvays, Brave Shores, Coleman Hell, Ria Mae, Hey Rosetta!, JJ & The Pillars and Metric.

Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (USS) won Favorite Song for Shipwreck and were presented with gold records from their management team for Yin Yang.

As my first CASBY experience, I had a great time. The only criticism I would make would be in relation to the list of nominees.  A more diversified list might be It seemed many of the artists were nominated for multiple categories.  Also, many of the winners were not present due to current tours, which took away from some of the fun of awards presentations.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees!
